Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What is Accelerated Math?
A: The Accelerated Math Program works from the 6th grade curriculum up to High School Algebra 1. By design, this is a very rigorous program and it will move at a fast pace, providing students with all the content and skills they need to fully understand all important topics in the curriculum while maintaining the continuity of the mathematics learning progression. Q: Who is the Accelerated Math Program designed for? A: Our middle school math program focuses on developing skills, problem-solving and critical thinking as outlined by the Chicago Public School -Department of Mathematics Framework, which is based on the national Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Although a majority of our students are expected to do very well with this curriculum, there are some students that regularly demonstrate skills that are well beyond state and national grade-levels and would be better served in a faster-paced course in which they are able to move through the mathematics curriculum quickly. The Accelerated Math Program is designed to meet this need. Q: Should my child join the Accelerated Math Program? A: This is up to you and your child. As a school, we pride ourselves in challenging students at all levels with a curriculum that promotes problem-solving and higher-order thinking. Our goal is to give students a strong math experience in every class. The aim of the Accelerated Math Program is to support students who are ready for a level of math well beyond the grade-level’s curriculum. Here are a few items to consider as you decide if your child should take the placement test:
Q: Can my child enter the Accelerated Math Program in another grade? We provide an opportunity for entry into the program in grade 5 with no placement test required. Students will apply at the end of 4th grade. At levels 6,7 and 8, it is by invitation only. |
